Thousands of 3D selfies of petitioners signing the ‘living petition’ remind world leaders their legal obligation to protect civilians in conflict zones at UN headquarters during the UN gneral Assembly being held this late September.
\nThe digital sculpture installation called \u00abThe Reflection\u00bb has mirrors and motion sensors that allow the eyes of the petitioners to follow world leaders and delegates as they enter the UN hall, reminding them that the whole world is watching, what they are doing.<\/p>\n

The campaign, designed by VML New York for the United Nations, was launched last 19th August on the World Humanitarian Day. The action is composed by two pieces: The ‘living petition’ signed with selfies and \u00abThe reflection\u00bb, the digital sculpture composed by\u00a0 the selfies of the petitioners transformed into 3D images now looking straight at the eyes of world leaders at UN headquarters hall in New York.
\nBoth the \u2018living petition\u2019 and \u00abThe Reflection\u00bb are part of UN #NotATarget campaign with encouraging\u00a0 world leaders to\u00a0 take action and protect the civilians in war zones.<\/p>\n

The #NotATarget campaign is rooted in the following facts: last year, three out of four victims in conflict zones were civilians. The number goes as high as almost 32,000 people\u201438% higher than last year.<\/p>\n

To get more participation from people, the UN, its agency, VML New York, and production partners Missing Pieces and Standard Transmission reinvented how petitions are made.<\/p>\n

No signatures were required. No forms to fill in. To sign the petition it was needed something that shows much more commitment, people\u2019s own images, their selfies. The \u2018living petition\u2019 called global Citizens to \u2018sign\u2019 with their selfies online at WorldHumanitarianDay.org, explained eastwind Fabio Seidl (Executive Creative Director VML New York).<\/p>\n

A new technology turned their faces into 3D images that then are displayed as the main part of a digital sculpture installation titled \u00abThe Reflection\u00bb. The digital installation\u00a0 was unveiled at UN headquarters last World Humanitarian Day last August. This is the same digital sculpture now displayed at UN headquarters during its General Assembly currently being held.<\/p>\n
