The Coordination Committee of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has nominated Mr. Daren Tang from Singapore for the post of Director General.
The WIPO General Assembly will meet in an extraordinary session on May 7-8, 2020, to confirm the Coordination Committee’s nomination.
Tang is currently the Chief Executive of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore. The term of the current Director General, Mr. Francis Gurry, ends on September 30, 2020.

Daren Tang is a qualified Lawyer with a Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B)with Honours by the National University of Singapore (1997), a Master of Laws (L.L:M) with Distinction by Georgetown University Law Centre, USA Fellow Institute of International Economic Law and an Advanced Management Program Harvard Business School, USA. But leaving aside this fact, the next Director General of the WIPO is a reputed as a pioneer of the IP world class legan regulations in his native country.
The most sound advances on IP protection thanks to Daren Tang’s action include the launch of worldwide IP innovative products,such as a mobile app for trademark application. He has also been the campion of the IP law protection for SMEs, as he put in place legislative reforms to the Singaporean IP litigation system to make itmore accessible for small and medium sized companies.
And these are just some of his widely recognised actions to push forward a practical and modern legal system to protect IP rights both in Singapore and Asia.

Tang overcomed the Chinese candidate by 27 votes
Tang prevailed in the second and final round of voting with 55 votes; Ms. Binying Wang of China received 28 votes.
The Coordination Committee, which comprises 83 member states, met on March 4, and held two rounds of voting from an initial list of six candidates.
Kazakhstan’s candidate withdrew her candidacy ahead of the first round of voting. Following the first round, the candidate with the least votes, from Peru, was eliminated.
Two other candidates, from Colombia and Ghana, withdrew their candidatures ahead of the second round of voting.
