Starbucks.- Focus on upscale Roasteries and retail with changes in leadership and new Siren Retail Group

Howard Schulz (President of Starbucks) announced today some important structural changes and leadership changes to become effective on 1st September, which will allow the coffee multinational, as Schulz said begining “the next phase of our growth and development.”

Focus on new store concepts and retail

Due to the Roastery upscale concept, Starbucks will accelerate and globalize the Roastery experience, building more roasteries in iconic cities, and threading the Roastery experience into hundreds of new coffee-forward Reserve stores around the world, which also will integrate the spectacular culinary experience of the multinalional’s new Italian food partner, Princi.

New Roasteries in New York City, Shanghai and other cities will be announced and
Cliff Burrows new role will include overseeing the global expansion of the Roastery, as well as the development of Starbucks Reserve stores.

In addition to the Roastery and Reserve stores, Burrows will be responsible for building out the Princi organization, including stand-alone Princi stores, and growing the Teavana business globally.

“Cliff’s move in particular is a big change, and I am delighted that, after eight years of successfully leading the Americas business, he will head up a new retail group we are calling Siren Retail,” Schulz underscored.

“Kevin (Johnson) and I have decided the company needs fully-dedicated leadership to create a true global retail organization. To lead this effort, I am pleased to announce that John Culver, a 14-year Starbucks partner whose talent and character are widely respected, will assume the role of Group President, Starbucks Global Retail, with responsibility for Starbucks retail sales around the world,” advanced Howard Schulz.

Culver remains as Ggroup President, China/Asia Pacific (CAP), Channel Development (CPG) and Emerging Brands till 1st September, when the appointment is effective.

Schulz changes his main responsibilities

Howard Schulz keeps on as Cairman and CEO, but will increase his focus on global strategy, global store development and store design innovation to position Starbucks for its next wave of global growth. He will also continue to work closely with his Senior Leadership Team to ensure continued disciplined growth and operational excellence around the world.
“With my priorities driven by the Roasteries, Reserve Stores, Princi and building a new premium business unit within Starbucks, Kevin Johnson’s priorities will continue to be on growing our core Starbucks business, channel development and the functional teams that support the company,” Schulz explained and added: “As we continue to pursue our aspirations, Kevin will lead the SLT”

In addition to Burrows and Culver, also reporting directly to Mr. Johnson will be Scott Maw, executive vice president, chief financial officer, Lucy Helm, evp, general counsel and secretary, Michael Conway, president, Global Channel Development, as well as the senior leaders of the Company’s supply chain, technology, partner (human) resources and marketing organizations.
