Volkswagen fully enters into the mobility services business

The Volkswagen Group today officially unveiled its mobility services company, MOIA, and the CEO of the company, Ole Harms.

“MOIA is an independent company under the umbrella of the Volkswagen Group, and will develop and market its own mobility services both independently and in collaboration with existing cities and transportation systems. In parallel, the Group’s brands will continue to develop their own services.

Our goal is to become in the medium term one of the leading names in mobility services worldwide. To achieve this, we want to attract the best minds and technological start-ups, “said Ole Harms.

The creation of MOIA is the consequence of an evolution within the German company that already anticipated this movement in its new strategy TOGETHER and has been advancing in this way with operations like the acquisition of Gett.

Individual mobility around the planet and car pooling

Individual mobility for everyone, this is what MOIA seeks. Convenient, accessible with just one click, at affordable prices and without having to own your own car. The biggest potential of MOIA in a first phase is the business of mobility on demand through an app. The Volkswagen Group has already paved the way for new mobility concepts with its participation in Gett, one of the leading providers of mobility on demand. Gett app users can now book transport, delivery and logistics services in more than 100 cities around the world.

“Together with Gett, we are pursuing a clearly defined expansion strategy in Europe. Recently, three of the Group’s brands have launched the first joint initiative with attractive vehicle packages for Gett drivers in the growing Moscow market. Soon other markets will join, “said Harms.

At the same time, MOIA focuses on a second main area, the car pooling or connected shared car transportation. The company’s goal is to establish its own on-demand car pooling services through the app.

The goal is to achieve holistic transportation solutions that make individual transportation and public transport more effective, avoiding unnecessary journeys and optimizing the use of existing road infrastructure.

MOIA aims to promote personal mobility throughout the world and therefore in cross-border transport. The first pilot projects in this field are scheduled for the start of 2017.

Because the needs of customers change and with them the business model

“Just as customer needs change, so does the automotive business model. In the major urban areas of the world there is a trend towards an increasingly strong shift from vehicle ownership to carsharing, as well as a greater demand for on-demand mobility.
That is why the Volkswagen Group has presented new mobility solutions and digital services as main elements of its future program “TOGETHER – Strategy 2025”, with the aim of securing its position as a leading global supplier in this field “, explained Thomas Sedran, Director of Strategy for Volkswagen AG.

A team of 50 people to start

Based in Berlin, MOIA will start operating with a team of about 50 people; A number that will increase until the end of 2017.
Frank Dilger (Chief Financial Officer) and Robert Henrich (Chief Operating Officer), who will assume their new responsibilities next January 1, 2017 complete the company’s management team. An Advisory Committee chaired by Thomas Sedran, Director of Strategy for Volkswagen AG, will support the MOIA team.

In Berlin and Hamburg

“The city of Berlin is the perfect location for an innovative and future-oriented company like MOIA, because that’s where we’ll find the creative minds and start-ups we need to establish our new business activities. With MOIA, we want to demonstrate that innovative mobility solutions are possible outside of Silicon Valley, “Harms explained.

Another important location for MOIA in Germany will be the city of Hamburg. In the autumn, the Volkswagen Group and the city agreed on a strategic three-year mobility alliance to promote safer, more reliable and more efficient urban mobility. The results of this partnership will also be incorporated into future MOIA projects in Europe.
