San Sebastian Film Festival.- The call for the Zinemaldia Startup Challenge is open

The San Sebastian International Film Festival opens the fifth call for the Zinemalda Startup Challenge, the competition for Spanish and other European entrepreneurs and startups with projects in the field of new technologies applied to the audiovisual field.
The deadline to get registered for this competition is June 1st 2023.

The Zinemaldia Startup Challenge is one of the activities of ‘Spanish Screenings: Financing & Tech’, one of the axes of ‘Spanish Screenings XXL. An international market for Spanish audiovisual production’.

In addition to the aforementioned Spanish startup contest, ‘Spanish Screenings: Financing & Tech’ will also include the second meeting of creative investors.
The selected projects will be presented at the Zinemaldia & Technology conference to be held on Thursday, September 28, during the San Sebastian Festival, and which will also include a round table.

The 71st edition of the San Sebastián International Film Festival will be held at San Sebastián (Spain) from September 22nd to 30th, this year.

Requirements to participate

The projects must meet several requirements to be eligible for the two Zinemaldia Startup Challenge competitions :

1.- They must have been recently started by an entreprenneur or startup -registered after December 31, 2017-. The projects can be persented whatever the phase of development they are;

2.- they must be projects to develop or apply new technologies to the audiovisual field;

3.- The entreprenneur or startup must have tax residence in Spain or in other European country and

4.- the startup or entreprenneur mist consider the possibility of launching the business project in the Basque Country.

The winners will get money more than money

A committee of experts made up of professionals from the BIC-Business and Innovation Centers of Euskadi, TECNALIA and Vicomtech will choose ten finalist projects (five Spanish and five from other Europeancountries).
The 10 selected projects will have the chance to use for free an incubation space during one year in one of the BICs (Business Innovation Centers) within the Euskadi Network of Technology Parks.

Two independent juries will select the winning projects, one from the domestic market competition and the other from the European competition, which will each receive €10,000.

In addition, this edition of the Zinemaldia Startup Challeng will allocate an additional amount of €3,000 to reward the best selected project presented by an entrepreneurial person or team. Winners and finalists will also have access to aditional financing of up to €500,000 for the development of their project inside the Basque Country.

Competition promoted by the Basque Government within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan

The Basque Government, through the Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment, is promoting the Zinemaldia Startup Challenge, the central initiative of the Zinemaldia & Technology conference, organized by the San Sebastian International Film Festival in collaboration with TECNALIA, ALÍA (Audiovisual Industrial Alliance) and Vicomtech.

Spanish Screenings is part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) to reinforce the role of Spain as Europe’s audiovisual hub and is promoted by the Ministry of Culture and Sports through the ICAA and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation (through ICEX España Exportación e Inversiones), the Malaga Film Festival and the San Sebastián International Film Festival.
