“Agreed with Google CEO @SundarPichai to work together with all major European and non-European #AI actors to already develop an “AI Pact” on a voluntary basis ahead of the legal deadline of the AI regulation.Thierry Breton (European Commissioner for Internal Market) tweeted after his meeting with Sundar Pichai (CEO Alphabet) held today in Brussels.
Summing up the meeting held with Pichai today, Margrethe Vestager (Vice President of the EU Commission and Commissioner in charge of Competition) said: “Good meeting w. @sundarpichai. We need the #AIAct as soon as possible. But AI technology evolves at extreme speed. So we need voluntary agreement on universal rules for #AI now. Already discussed at #G7 digital in Takakasi. We will follow up in the #TTC next week. No time to lose”
Following an information published by Reuters, Vestager ( Vice president of the EU Commission and President of the EU Commission for an EU fit for the Digital Future) had advanced yesterday that the next EU Regulation on Artificial Intelligence could be ready by the end of 2023, although it will take between one and two years before it enters into force.
Meanwhile, she pointed as well, the European Union and the United States are ready to intensify cooperation in this field in order to establish some minimum and common standards before the entry into force of the legal rules on AI still to be approved both in the US and the EU.
“We expect technology in Europe to respect all of our rules, on data protection, online safety, and artificial intelligence.
In Europe, it’s not pick and choose. I am pleased that @SundarPichai recognises this, and that he is committed to complying with all EU rules,” Commissioner Breton added in a second tweet.
During his visit and meeting with the Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, European leaders and students in Stockholm yesterday Sundar Pichai talked about how can be built and applied AI responsibly and also announced the launch of Alphabet’s new €10million Social Innovation Fund on AI, “which can help European entrepreneurs do that” Pichai tweeted.
