The Spanish Agency for the Protection of Personal Data (AEPD) has opened an infringement procedure against Google for the collection of personal data from Wi-Fi networks, while recording the images of the cities that Google planned to include in its Street View service. The AEPD attributed to Google Spain and Google Inc. the commission of two serious and three very serious infringements against the Organic Law of Data Protection (LOPD) currently in force in Spain. People complain against the “sweet and innocent cookies” and now here it comes Google “stealing” our secrets, as this tech giant were a plain “papparaci”. We all understand that personal information must be protected so that citizens do not find in a completely defenseless position against organizations that become more and more powerful. Although this legal limits if too strict might damage the commercial interests of the behavioural and relational marketing companies.
The progress and expansion of the new information technologies and the increasingly sophisticated possibilities offered makes the need of an adecuate legal protection even more urgent.
Excess are within a hand reach. The Big Brother stalks menacing the privacy and freedom of every and each person, should the Authorities not take actions to put him under the legal limit. And now the abuses get to a world scale.
